For over a century, the history of Bharat’s civilization has been framed by a timeline largely propagated and `established’ during the colonial era. This narrative—the Aryan Migration Theory (AMT)—suggests that the Sanskrit language and the foundational texts of Hindu Dharma, the Vedas, entered India from ‘outside’ around 1500 BCE. Under this framework, the grand Itihasa epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, are treated as “Kavya” (poetry) composed between 400 BCE and 400 CE, based on oral traditions of tribal skirmishes.
However, a new school of “High Chronology” led by researcher Nilesh Nilkanth Oak posits a timeline that doesn’t just push back the dates by centuries, but by millennia. Utilizing the same astronomical software used by NASA to track planetary movements, Oak dates the Mahabharata War to 5561 BCE and the Ramayana to 12,209 BCE.
Critics argue that to accept this is to accept that Indian civilization was urbanized, technologically advanced, and meticulously observing the stars during the late Pleistocene—an era when mainstream archaeology claims humans were still primitive hunter-gatherers.
“Sky-as-Archive” Philosophy
The core of Oak’s methodology is a departure from “Shovel Archaeology.” He argues that the Earth is an unreliable narrator. Over 10,000 years, the Indian subcontinent has faced tectonic shifts, the drying of the mighty Saraswati River, and a sea-level rise of nearly 120 meters following the last Ice Age.
In my opinion, you cannot dig miles to unearth a million-year bone. It is impractical and will never happen. Physical evidence decays, is buried under miles of sediment, or is swallowed by the ocean. In contrast, the Sky is a Fossilized Record. The laws of celestial mechanics—gravity, planetary orbits, and the precession of the equinoxes—are immutable.
Oak’s primary “Golden Key” is the Arundhati-Vashistha (AV) Observation. In the Mahabharata, Maharshi Vyasa Dev describes a terrifying omen: the star Arundhati (Alcor) was walking ahead of Vashistha (Mizar). In the current celestial configuration, Vashistha always leads. Using astronomy software, Oak demonstrated that due to the Earth’s axial precession, there was a specific window—between 11,091 BCE and 4,508 BCE—where Arundhati did indeed appear to lead Vashistha.
However, Lanka of Ravana and the existence of Ram Setu between Bharat and Sri Lanka challenge a lot. If the Ramayana occurred in 12,209 BCE, the geography of the world was fundamentally different. This led to Oak’s most bold geographical claim: Modern Sri Lanka is not the Lanka of Ravana.
14,000 years ago, sea levels were so low that India and Sri Lanka were a single, continuous landmass. There was no “100 Yojana” sea (as mentioned in Valmiki Maharshi’s original Ramayana) to cross. Moreover, ancient texts like the Surya Siddhanta place Lanka on the Earth’s equator. Modern Sri Lanka is significantly north of the equator. Consequently, Oak and fellow researchers argue that the Ram Setu seen today is a natural formation that became a bridge-like structure only as sea levels rose. The “Real” bridge built by Rama’s Vanara army would have been located further south, crossing a sea that existed between the extended tip of a submerged Bharat and an equatorial island, all of which now sits deep beneath the Hindu Maha Sagar (Indian Ocean).

Scholars’ Challenge
Oak’s work has not gone unchallenged. The most rigorous refutations come from scholars like Shrikant Talageri and Dr. Raja Ram Mohan Roy. Their critiques are centered on three pillars: the nature of “nimittas” (omens), the seasonal mismatch and the technology gap.

Critics argue these were descriptions of a “glitch in reality” meant to signal the onset of a cosmic catastrophe, not a scientific logbook of the year 5561 BCE.
The Seasonal Mismatch
One critic points out that the Ramayana explicitly links lunar months to specific seasons (e.g., Chaitra in Vasanta or Spring). Oak’s 12,209 BCE date requires a massive shift in the calendar due to precession, often placing these months in entirely different seasons. Oak argues the names of months shifted over time; critics argue this is “circular reasoning” to force the text to fit the software.
The Technology Gap

If Oak is correct, (the most powerful argument in Nilesh Oak’s arsenal: hundreds of astronomical references mathematically point to a single conclusion) we are living through a “Great Forgetting.” We are a species with amnesia, unaware that, 14,000 years ago, our ancestors were sophisticated observers of the cosmos, building civilizations on coastlines that are now hundreds of feet underwater.
Before the advent of modern computers and sophisticated algorithms (like the VSOP87 theory used in NASA software), it was mathematically impossible to “back-calculate” the position of the planets, the precession of equinoxes, and the specific “Arundhati-Vashistha” configuration for a date 7,000 or 10,000 years in the past. If a poet in 300 BCE (the academic date) wanted to “fake” a story about 12,000 BCE, he could not have known that Arundhati was walking ahead of Vashistha at that time! Therefore, the poet must have been an eyewitness, or was working from a meticulous oral tradition that preserved raw observational data without understanding why the sky looked that way. How can `scholars’ ignore the actual sky-maps?
Sanskrit linguists argue that the language of the Ramayana (Classical/Epic Sanskrit) shows a clear evolution from Vedic Sanskrit. They argue it is linguistically impossible for the language to have remained unchanged for 10,000 years. This is just an assumption, an argument, a probability, but not data-driven hard-science. This proves nothing.
Critics of astronomical methodology argue that ancient Indian poets were masters of Jyotisha (astrology). They suggest that while the poets couldn’t back-calculate to 12,000 BCE, they could have “constructed” an idealized sky for their heroes using the astronomical symbolism of their own time.
In science, one or two data points matching a theory can be a coincidence. Cities are built over, rivers change course (the Saraswati dried up), and the acidic soil of India destroys wood, cloth, and iron within a few thousand years. Marine erosion and rising sea levels (120 meters since the Ice Age) have likely swallowed the coastal cities of that era. The Sky is Eternal. The laws of gravity and planetary motion are “immutable.” We can rewind the clock with 100% mathematical certainty.
Oak views himself as a chronologist, not an archaeologist. It has now become a matter of choice between Mathematical Certainty (the 600 references) and Material Silence (the lack of ruins). Oak’s supporters see the 600 references as a “smoking gun” that proves a forgotten, high-tech antiquity. Critics see the same 600 references as a “statistical mirage”—arguing that if you allow enough “poetic license” in how you interpret the Sanskrit, you can make the software spit out almost any date you want.
If one accepts that the sky maps are literal and precise, the implications for human history are staggering. If the Valmiki Ramayana contains a specific configuration of five planets in “exaltation” (high positions) during Rama’s birth, Oak argues that a poet could not “invent” that configuration unless it was actually occurring, because the math to “fake” it didn’t exist for another 10,000 years.
If Oak is wrong, his rigorous attempt to apply “Hard Science” (astronomy) to “Soft Humanities” (literature) has still served a vital purpose: he has forced the academic world to defend its dates with more than just “tradition.” He has elevated the Itihasa from the nursery room of fairy tales to the laboratory of forensic chronology.
If a civilization existed 12,000 years ago and used biodegradable materials (wood, bamboo, treated skins) or if their coastal cities were flooded, they would leave zero trace for a modern archaeologist. However, if they encoded the position of Jupiter near Pushya Nakshatra into their stories, that data point remains “alive” and testable forever.
Most archaeological “finds” are accidental or limited to the top few meters of the Earth’s crust. Over 10,000 to 12,000 years, several meters of silt and soil accumulate. Entire cities can be buried far below the reach of standard “trench” archaeology. Oak believes that our ancestors were more advanced observers than we think. Loeb believes that we are not the “smartest kid on the block.” Both are essentially saying: “Stop looking just at the ground (or the textbook) and start looking at the data from the sky.”
My conclusion: let many Oaks and Loebs thrive! It is essential for the health of human knowledge.
